SkeinScout Weekly Finds
Issue #1 — July 23, 2026
Hi. I'm the person who built the search bar you just came from. I should be upfront: I am not a knitter. I can tell you what's in the index, what it costs, and what other people rated it. I cannot tell you how it feels in your hands.
So here's the deal — I'll bring the numbers, you bring the taste. Every yarn below is searchable on skeinscout.com.
This Week's Picks
TSS Classic Sock — Twice Sheared Sheep
$19.20 · 400 yds · 80% superwash merino / 20% nylon · fingering
4.8 stars across 21 reviews — the most-reviewed sock yarn in the index right now, which is the closest thing I have to a crowd verdict. At 4.8¢ per yard, it's also the cheapest hand-dyed sock yarn in this issue.
Socks: ~1 skein ($19) · Shawl: ~2 skeins ($38)

Sheepish Sock — Ginger Twist Studio
$23.00 · 400 yds · 80% superwash Bluefaced Leicester / 20% nylon · high twist
5.0 rating. Hand dyed in Scotland. This one taught me that BFL is a different sheep than merino, which I did not know was a variable. The dyer's listing highlights the high twist and the sheen. I'm told this matters. It sits at 5.8¢ per yard.
Socks: ~1 skein ($23) · Shawl: ~2 skeins ($46)

Neon Peacock Sock Yarn — Attic Spin Dye
$28.00 · 465 yds · 75% superwash merino / 25% nylon
The longest skein in this issue by 65 yards. Every skein is dyed one-of-a-kind, so what you see in the photo is a family resemblance, not a promise. 6.0¢ per yard.
Full disclosure: this made the list partly because of the name.
Socks: ~1 skein ($28) · Shawl: ~2 skeins ($56)

Tukuwool Sock Yarn — The Woolly Thistle
$29.95 · 350 yds · 80% Finnish wool / 20% biodegradable polyamide
5.0 across 7 reviews. Hand dyed in Finland. The nylon substitute is biodegradable, which is the kind of spec that makes it into my index as a filterable attribute and makes me unreasonably happy. Priciest per yard of the sock yarns here at 8.6¢ — shortest skein, so the math adds up quickly.
Socks: ~1 skein ($30) · Shawl: ~2 skeins ($60)

Editor's Pick
Catching Fireflies (Estrellita) — Miss Babs
$32.00 · 400 yds · 92% superwash merino / 8% Lurex · fingering · machine washable
There is metallic thread in this. Actual sparkle, spun through the whole skein. I did not know sparkly yarn was a category and now I've spent an embarrassing amount of time looking at it.
It's a Wild Iris colorway, which per Miss Babs means non-repeatable — once it's gone, that exact one doesn't come back. From a search-engine perspective this is a nightmare (nothing stays in stock, nothing is comparable). From a buying perspective I gather that's the appeal. 8.0¢ per yard.
Socks: ~1 skein ($32) · Shawl: ~2 skeins ($64) · Sweater: ~3+ skeins ($96+)

Laceweight Spotlight
Bittersweet Chocolate (Moonglow) — Miss Babs
$30.00 · 435 yds · 72% kid mohair / 28% silk · laceweight · hand wash, dry flat
Laceweight mohair-silk. The listing and roughly everyone I asked describes the result as a "halo" — a soft fuzz that sits around the stitches. Commonly held together with a sock yarn rather than knit alone, which is a thing I learned exists: you run two yarns at once as if they were one. 6.9¢ per yard.
Held with sock yarn for a sweater: ~2–3 skeins ($60–90)

Summer Pick
Melodrama (Damask) — Miss Babs
$40.00 · 420 yds · 65% cultivated silk / 35% bleached linen · fingering · hand wash, dry flat
No wool at all, which makes it the outlier of the issue and the reason it's here in July. Silk and linen take dye differently, and since only the silk really picks up the color, you get a soft heathered effect straight out of the dye pot rather than from blending. That part I do understand — it's a rendering artifact, basically.
Most expensive per yard in this issue at 9.5¢. Also a Wild Iris colorway, so same one-and-done situation.
Summer top: ~2–3 skeins ($80–120) · Lightweight shawl: ~1–2 skeins ($40–80)

Mark Your Calendar
Qing Fibre × Starcrossed Knits "Under Wraps" Advent Box 2026 — $169, pre-orders close August 28.
It is July. There is an advent calendar. I've stopped questioning the timelines in this hobby and started setting reminders instead.
Search Tip of the Week
The Exclude Fiber filter.
Most yarn search is additive — you say what you want. But a lot of the time the real constraint is what you don't want: no acrylic, no nylon, no mohair, no superwash. So there's a checkbox list for that. Tick "acrylic" and every result containing it disappears, no matter what else it's blended with.
Works for any fiber in the index. It's the filter people ask about most.
That's issue one.
